Church School

Church School runs until mid-May.  Regular classes take place during our worship service which begins at 11 a.m.  Children and Youth begin by attending the worship service.  After the “Time with the Children” — early in the service — both children and youth leave to attend their Church School classes.  During May and June we have a more informal Blue Jean Church School.

This year we continue to use an online curriculum called The Best of the Whole People of God Online.  This resource is published by Wood Lake Books.  Our curriculum has a website found at www.wholepeopleofgod.com.  This curriculum follows the lectionary (a prescribed course of Bible readings), which is our custom in the worship service.  Most weeks, students and adults learn from the same Bible readings.

The Youth Classes explore themes that are of interest to the youth and relevant to their Christian growth.  Guest speakers are often a part of their program.  On occasion our Youth lead us in worship as readers and with their always creative Youth Services!

Church School classes are for ages 4 all the way to students in Grade 12.  Infants and toddlers under the age of 3 are cared for during worship in the Nursery (please follow the signs in the Narthex).  We have a special program for the three year olds called Little Lambs.  The children hear a story and do a simple craft or activity each week.  This helps to smooth the transition to the regular Church School classes at age four.  A few times a year, the younger members of the Church School (age 4 – grade 6) meet together in the Gym for a multi-age gathering.

Screening

Our Church School screens our teachers and regular volunteers. All of our teaching staff and regular volunteers are asked to undertake a Child Abuse Registry Check. In addition to the regular screening of our ministry staff, we feel this is an important part of our duty of care for your child or youth. We place a high level of importance on regular oversight and support of our volunteers in the Church School and we value their concern for the safety, care and well being of your children and young people.

Children with Special Needs

Our Church School includes students who have special needs. Our staff and teachers work hard to provide a welcoming and safe Church School environment for all children. If your child has special needs we need to know about, never hesitate to speak with Mona or Maggie or your child’s teacher.

Volunteering

Our Church School is blessed to have a paid Church School Coordinator, Maggie Barnett. Maggie does a wonderful job supporting our teachers and seeing that supplies are ordered and in place for each Sunday. The Christian Education Committee also supports and oversees our Church School. We do always require volunteers to make our program a meaningful and positive experience for our students. It is good to experience Church School with your child. We also need parent help at multi-age lessons.
